The YouTube/Google combination (I like to think of them as GooTube) has a new exciting twist with the inclusion of Google Moderator Module on YouTube channels. What this means is that you can post a video on YouTube and have your respondents democratically vote for which response they think is the best. This way you can see what people want to hear back from you and respond to the most popular questions, or if you want, to the whole conversation. You get to show off how knowledgeable you are and really get to know your customers. YouTube Help can show you how to make it happen.
What this means for business and a web marketing point of view is that: by using the canny medium that is YouTube, you can now reach your customers in a most personal and interactive way. Imagine posting video asking customers, who might want to visit your kitchen design company, what they want to see in a new kitchen and offer them an incentive of say 50% off a new kitchen for the best suggestion. Hey presto, everyone’s talking about your company, you get lots of great ideas, your company’s website gets more hits and you get more business. All this and it naturally creates a better experience for your users. Everyone wins!

Obama’s done it. Google does it. Even Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harpers has done it – Originally the idea was a project by Google engineer Taliver Heath who wanted a way to control the flood of questions flung at Google during their supremely popular lectures and meetings. (Here is his blog post when he announced it in September 2008.) This was extended to special events such as interviews with Obama and Stephen Harper, which effectively democratically elected which questions people wanted to have asked. I think it is an excellent new addition to an already highly usable medium. I wonder whats next?
