There's no sense resting on your laurels when you're at the top of the internet video game. Which is why that self respecting homemade video sluice-gate YouTube is improving its service. The way in which people are using video sites is changing so YouTube are diversifying and improving the different channels through which people can access all the cinematic goodness.
First of all, the mobile version of YouTube's site – m.youtube.com – has received something of a makeover. It's now been improved for speed, has had its interface optimised for touch screen interactivity, gained some .com features like 'favorite' and has promised to roll out more new features with increased frequency.

Secondly we have the unusually named 'Leanback'. This is basically an interface change that has been optimised for full-screen viewing. The normal YouTube web interface is replaced with a minimalist offering that has been optimised to keep the flow of videos moving. It feels like a system for people who are watching YouTube on a large screen – the list of videos are based on your YouTube preferences, but can also be customised to feature content watched by your online friends via an optional link to your Facebook account.
So Leanback might not be for everyone, but it is a clear indication of the path online video is taking. The backdrop of Google TV adds even more credence to the idea that the television entertainment we previously picked via traditional channels will be replaced by internet based alternatives. It feels like that tipping point is almost visible on the horizon.
