YouTube To Document Life with “Life in a Day”

The internet is a powerful tool for collaboration, its diverse and location-less nature means that the geographic positioning of the participants is no longer an important factor. The success of photo and video sites such as flickr and YouTube shows there is a massive appetite for the sharing and discussion of these types of creative outlet.

It is YouTube who have decided to take this a stage further with a new project to document people’s lives through their viewfinder on one particular day – July 24th. It doesn’t have to be anything special, the morning commute by bike, a rainbow during your lunch break or ducks squabbling over some bread, just anything filmed on July 24th.

Once the footage has been uploaded to the “Life in a Day” YouTube channel Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald will be editing the footage into a documentary film. Director of cinematic classics like Gladiator and Blade Runner, Ridley Scott, will also be executive-producing the film. The project is being supported by LG.

Interested? Want to take part? Google’s Official blog has the details:

  1. Check the “Life in A Day” YouTube channel to get the details on what you need to do to take part – there are some guidelines you need to follow.
  2. Film your footage on July 24th (might want to pray for some nice weather as well)
  3. You have until July 31st to upload your footage to the “Life in a Day” Channel.

It looks like a really interesting project that has managed to attract some big Hollywood names. I’m looking forward to seeing the diverse range of footage that is submitted – quite how you tie footage from a windswept Scottish mountaintop to the urban intensity of Tokyo is sure to be an interesting task for Kevin Macdonald. I’m intrigued to see what sort of narrative they can create.
