Wolfram|Alpha has announced a number of improvements to its well regarded and ground breaking search engine. For those who haven’t used Wolfram|Alpha before, it’s a search engine with a difference – it doesn’t just search the internet for information already present on the internet, it actually answers questions based on a huge dataset of information.

For example, if you wanted to know how many times bigger the population of China was compared the UK, you can simply type “China population / UK population” into Wolfram|Alpha. You are then presented with the answer 21.49 (based on 2007 estimates) and a graph of how this value has changed over the past few decades. There is no doubting that Wolfram|Alpha is a powerful tool and smart variation on the normal search engine.

The latest blog post details a number of improvements and functions that they have added since May ‘09, from Statistical and Mathematical functions to Health and Science functions allowing the calculation of information such as your carbon footprint, it’s really neat stuff! Well worth a look.
