The Los Angeles Times has an interesting report on the future of the popular US TV streaming site Hulu. The site has allowed users to watch TV programs on their computers for free, sure they have adverts, but for the convenience of TV on demand then in my opinion it’s a small price to pay. We all know how useful the BBC’s iPlayer and Channel 4’s 4oD services are for the busy TV watcher.
Turns out some people may think that all is not necessarily well with the current model, the Los Angeles Times reports after talking to “people with knowledge of the plans”:
“In the past, Hulu primarily offered shows that were broadcast over the air for free. But now, as the major networks are trying to extract payments from cable operators and television station groups, they can no longer justify offering the same shows online for free.”
Can’t help thinking this is a shame for this web service, customers have been used to free access to this content but it seems that industry factors may be grinding away at the viability of this model.
In addition it’s difficult not to look with slightly envious eyes at this service as it's not available in the UK. There may be problems with differing release dates for programs but perhaps the UK might be more open to the idea of a monthly subscription to watch US programs online, after all we haven’t become accustomed to the free service.
..More information can be found on the Los Angeles Times site, and by visiting Hulu.
