As W3C standards are constantly being changed to create a better web, CSS3 support is becoming a big priority. CSS3 provides progress in a variety of areas such as transitions, transforms and even animations in web page elements. CSS3 basically looks to revolutionise how we use CSS in web design.
As the web moves ever forward, browsers are becoming capable of rendering more advanced code. However it’s still at the stage where the majority of browsers do not support many of the more advanced elements in CSS3. Certain properties of CSS3 such as border-radius and box-shadow are gaining momentum in a variety of browsers such as Safari, Chrome and Gecko. This is allowing attractive, light weight web pages with better usability, but this only represents a small part of what CSS3 can do.
Transformation properties allow scaling, rotation and translation (moving) of page elements while CSS animation can provide both 2D and 3D animations. Unfortunately there is still very limited support for several of these elements (particularly 3D animation) in web browsers.
At this stage, few browsers have actual in-depth support for modern CSS3 application but moves towards this are in place. 3D animation currently only works in the ‘nightly’ version of Webkit and 2D animation has limited support.
The CSS3 website provides further information on this matter as well as insight into how IE9 will provide almost complete support. It seems that in the near future the capabilities of CSS could really enhance the web experience, taking the place of JavaScript in many areas. However, this near-future isn’t as near as many might hope.
