Viva La Web Revolution!

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the fall of Berlin wall and the stark metaphor that this represents plays a major part in the Breaking Borders Awards from Google. The reason the fall of the Berlin wall is relevant is that it was at the Breaking Borders Conference in Berlin last year that Google paid tribute in their way by announcing that they where to work with an NGO called Global Voices, and Thomson Reuters, to establish their Award for web projects that mirror the ideals that the conference promoted.

Therefore this year marks the First Breaking Borders award for web projects from groups and individuals that emphasise the true resourcefulness, creativity and courage to promote freedom of expression. The websites considered will be those who are striving to spread awareness of the diverse political and sociological viewpoints out there and who stand up to the censorship of information.

It’s good to see an awards program that supports and honours web projects that make a difference. The fact is that the internet is possibly the greatest vehicle available for the exchange of ideas and freedom of speech and this is something that is often taken for granted. However, the internet is not without its censors so it is good to see a big player like Google getting behind the little guy.

The closing date for submission is the 15th of February so there is still plenty of time for you to find out more about the awards and put forward your nominations.

If you have any sites or campaigns for freedom that you have seen on the web that are somewhat inspiring let us know.
