This is a subject that, here at the Cozy Digital, we have gone into great detail with and this latest Webmasters video by Matt Cutt’s gave me the opportunity to drill home the importance of writing unique product descriptions for your website.
Why Don’t Businesses write Unique Product Descriptions?
For the most part this is due to time constraints. Most businesses feel that using the manufacturers product description will do just fine as this will save them a whole lot of time, because if you consider that some ecommerce websites have hundreds of different products you can easily see the time that is involved with writing unique content.
What I would say to businesses that go for this approach is that if you don’t write unique descriptions this will ultimately affect your sales and investing a little time every month to write unique descriptions will set your site apart from the hundreds of others, and at the end of the day will increase your sales. Let’s be honest isn’t that the name of the game here? If you think you can get a website designed and sit back and watch the money roll in then I’m sorry, you've misunderstood the nature of the internet and more importantly your customers.
Why Should I care?
You should care because Google has duplicate content filters to ignore webpage’s that have the same content, so by using generic content may result in your pages never being seen by a searcher on Google and if you’re not seen then people aren’t going to be aware of the great products or services that you offer.
I haven’t the Time, so what can I do?
To be honest you need to make time. Start by identifying your most popular products and start there and over time write content for every product. Having product reviews on your website can also help create unique content on your product pages. If you really don’t have time for any of these then your other option is employ SEO copywriting services from a well established SEO or copywriting company and let them take the stress and worry out of this problem for you.
