It’s been no secret that the weather has dominated the news and water cooler conversations for the last few weeks. It’s no surprise either, with more snow in the last couple of weeks than we’ve seen in the last decade. As a result of the heavy snowfall many people were unable to get to work in some of the harder hit areas across Britain. This factor will mostly account for why weather and transport websites reached an all time traffic high.
According to information gathered by Experian Hitwise, searches for transport and weather news reached their peak on the 9th of January this year. As of the week ending the 9th weather websites accounted for 1.52% of all UK internet visits. Many weather and travel related sites shot up in popularity with BBC Weather reaching the 12th most visited, the Met Office homepage in 22nd and National Rail Enquiries up to 56th.
The bad weather caused travel chaos across the country and some of the searches for the 4 weeks preceding the 9th highlight this. The most popular weather related search term in that time was ‘snow forecast’ with searches for that term up 378% on the same time last year. Further information and tables reflecting the weather and transport related searches can be found on the Experian Hitwise website along with details of the most popular local council searches at the time.
