Show your World Cup Love with Facebook and Chrome

With the world cup now well under way and the groups starting to really take shape, the global phenomenon has caused serious ripples online. Social networking sites have become the rising stars of the internet, so where better to vent your World Cup woes or show the love for your national team than on Facebook.

Get Behind Your Team

It’s been running for a while now so Facebook users have had plenty of time to show their support for a nation, be it their own or just their preferred winner for other reasons. The ‘Support Your Team’ section on Facebook lets you thumb up your favourite team showing which nation has the most avid online support. The surprise front runner in the passion rankings is Chile with over 400,000 likes. Not bad for an internet population of only 8.3 million. Languishing slightly further down the list in 14th are the English who despite an online population of over 36.5 million, could still only manage 326,035 likes for their team.

Of course this pales in comparison to the depressingly low 620 likes for North Korea. Although this isn’t too bad for a country with a non-existent internet population (according to Facebook). Perhaps there are a few sympathetic voters out there, or just a single North Korean on a mission. Despite North Korea’s noble effort against Brazil, they are in the group of death, so I think they can use all the support they can get. I’ve liked North Korea and I suggest you do to. Tell your friends to do so and maybe we can get North Korea off the foot of the table, or at least up to 1,000 likes.

Show Your Colours

If you’ve already thumbed up your favourite team but still have a world cup itch that needs scratching, then why not open up your Chrome browser and head over to the Google world cup section. Paint your browser in your team’s colours, explore South African Stadiums in streetview, get updated schedules and standings in search or sign up for the Fifa Chrome extension for up to the minute scores and news updates.

The internet has got a serious case of football fever. Catch it!
