Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #39: Out of the Google Frying Pan…

…and into the firing line. There’s never a dull moment when it comes to Google. While the search engine of choice it gets its fair share of praise, on the flip side it’s never far from a bit of controversy. Between peeking at your emails and inciting angry Germans (not exactly a mean feat), Google are looking worse than Amy Winehouse’s liver.

It's No Yolk!

In a bizarre story, it seems Google have more of a devoted German following than they might have thought after several eggy attacks on the homes of those who opted out of their houses being shown on Google maps. I can’t help but feel it’s slightly ironic that in trying to hide their homes they’ve put them in the spotlight. Talk about egg on your face…

Privacy? What Privacy?!

Moving swiftly on and Google have had the legal book thrown at them again. This time (no surprises) over privacy issues. It seems that once again Google’s somewhat skewed view of privacy has landed them in hot water after a Texan man has sued them for scanning an email sent to a Gmail account from his non-Gmail email service.

Google, like a habitual voyeur seem incapable of stopping themselves when it comes to private data as they clearly continue to exploit it to tailor adverts for you. With things escalating this fast, it probably won’t be long before Google start stealing your medical records. Advertising on Google may take an alarming turn when you get ads probing you worse that the doctor.

Google Book

Of course Google will make everything better. They always do. “Stole your data did we? Invading your privacy eh? Never mind look at this, ooh shiny! Oh by the way, sounds like you could use some thrush cream.”

Google’s latest little treat for us comes in the form of a book that can be used online and offline helping people understand the internet and HTML 5 specifically. Its layman terms chapters seem to include: “What is Internet?”, “How Turn On?” and “The Front to Back Wiping Method”. In fairness however, and with a note less cynicism it actually seems to give a semi-useful insight into the internet for the less tech savvy.

Inside Google Robots

As another little treat for webmasters and SEO’s, Google have provided some information about how their robots work. That’s their website crawling bots and not the thousands stored in a warehouse in Mountain View like some futuristic terracotta army. Just waiting…

Nope, these are the good bots that crawl your site and tell Google how cool it is. So any inside information on how they work and how best to implement your robots.txt file for them is a bonus.

Facebook Book?

On a final note this week, a Facebook comic book is coming this December. Sure to be a big seller at Christmas this comic will contain all of the exciting things that have happened to Mark Zuckerberg such as writing code, going on chat shows, emailing people, erm… making toast? Not exactly spiderman-esque is it. Without trying to sound overtly negative about this I would think that a comic book about Facebook would be about as much fun as soiling yourself at a funeral. Your own funeral.
