Well it seems that winter is upon us as the thermometer drops faster than Liverpool’s league title aspirations. It’s cold, it’s wet and it seems like everyone is suffering from the dreaded lurgy, but we’ll still fire out the latest updates of internet and SEO news as long as the internet doesn’t succumb to the big chill. With all the latest from Google this week, we’re delivering it with a wit sharper than Reese Witherspoon’s chin.
SEO got a little present this week in the form of Google Webmaster Tools new link analysis info. Pretty handy when you consider good backlinks can be your websites gamma radiation, turning it into a search rankings hulk without the anger issues. With the new Webmaster features you can now check up on who’s linking to you, the pages with the most links and the anchor text used in your links.
Not content with that? Well Google are also serving up advanced in-page analytics. It seems Google must have got its brains together at some point and thought “hmmm, this Analytics site overlay feature is a bit of a lame duck”. So in typical Google fashion, they’ve rehashed it and renamed it to confuse people into thinking it’s new. But is it better? Well, it’s basically what you’d expect, slightly better organised with more advanced features. Bear in mind it’s still in Beta, so you can forgive Google if at some point you find a few gremlins in the system.
For the large scale businesses out there, the Google Search Appliance offers the chance to have your own private little version of Google for your business. Basically, this integrates all of your business files into it allowing you to search through your business sources from intranet to databases, spreadsheets to presentations instantly. For $30, 000 (just root down the back of the couch), businesses can get their hands on what appears to be the spawn of Google and an X box using a Swiss cheese prophylactic.
Finally Google have turned to YOU this week to create some great product demos for a variety of their products and services as long as you’re in the US. So cue an abundance of demos of ‘grande’ Americans using Google maps to find a burger hole or others struggling to understand why they can’t use Google translate to find the Scotch language. Having said that, the two in the product demos post are actually pretty good.
