Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #33: Count Googula

Deep in the recesses of Mount View, there lies a dark secret. A place of sinister goings on where web-based services take form. Not created but congealed from the toe jam of the net. The Googleplex, headquarters of Google Inc.: the secretive organisation hell bent on taking over the world, lies waiting to make its next move. And what is its next move? Why it’s Google TV. Those sneaky devils.

Ok, I admit it might seem a bit of an over the top and over harsh introduction for Google but why tone down when you can do things with a bit of bravado? The fact is that while they might not dwell within a dormant volcano or underwater lair, Google do seem to be taking over the world. From their dominance of the web, Google are spiralling outwards into the world of internet TV. It’s been in the pipes for a while but to help showcase the hardware, Google are doing what they do best, developing apps for it.

Not content with just that Google have gone nuts with a variety of new features and applications for everyone. A new incarnation of the URL shortener, search keyword shortcuts, Chrome updates and Google instant changes aimed at making it less offensively bossy. Predict my search would you? My enter key is getting less use than Kate Moss’ fridge.

In an ever present supplement on the Cozy Digital we look up Matt Cutts for a bit of SEO know how from his webmaster videos. Breaking down SEO into bite size chunks and answering our questions as ever, is the love child of Harold Bishop from neighbours and a bag of cheesy Doritos. This week Matt tells us all about what effect browser compatibility has on page rank and how site availability affects ranking.

Finally we escape the clutches of the Google overlords to the world of the Bing untermensch. While not on the scale of Google, Bing have now teamed up with the browser that sounds like a seriously scaled up version of fox hunting, Firefox. With their search tool built into the new version of Firefox, both parties seem to want to identify their ‘special relationship’. Google however, couldn’t keep their claws retracted for long, with a statement suggesting that while Bing and Firefox might be ‘together’, Firefox was still in love with Google deep down and would realize they’re meant to be.

Firefox responded to these comments saying: “Settle down baby, there’s plenty of Firefox to go round.”
