Ah, to live in a capitalist society. Everybody loves a bargain and there are plenty of stores out there providing cheap clothing and goods thanks to good old fashion child labour. Plus with their small delicate hands the stitching is near perfect. Thanks Cambodian Orphans! Of course that’s a somewhat cynical side of retail and I’m sure many retailers rely on less controversial means of manufacturing its products. This week it’s all about business and how everybody’s looking to get rich online.
It makes sense. After all, a consumer survey in June showed that UK online retail sales went up 20%. Apparently, the largest proportion of that rise was down to the purchase of alcohol – possibly down to that little sporting event known as the World Cup or a large Irish wedding. Either way, online retailers are looking to take advantage of the rise in any way they can, and as usual the internet provides.
For those businesses running their own websites there are so many gadgets and tools available, they’ve got more potential than MacGyver trapped in B&Q. Businesses can get listed in Google places for free and can get their listing to stand out from the crowd with our handy little listing optimisation guide.
Google AdWords is also now easier to use with the role out of modified broad match keywords: allowing you to further tweak your AdWords account to make your keywords more relevant to the results they’re pulled up for.
Away from Google now, Yahoo and Bing’s advertising merger is getting well underway and they’ve even created a video with a ‘two island’s merging’ metaphor to help all us simpletons to understand what’s going on. Expect the merged advertising partnership to be named either Bahoo! or Ying or possibly ‘Diet Google’.
In addition Bing are providing a redesign of their webmaster tools, stating that it’s built based on a lengthy research into exactly what users wanted from forums and public feedback. It’s funny then that so many people have already complained that the service isn’t what they wanted.
In other more bizarre internet news Facebook have properly rolled out their own online currency called ‘Facebook Credits’. In relation to other made up currencies, I’d rank it somewhere between monopoly money and the Euro.
As an addition this week we’ve also taken the time to draw up a guide to installing ecommerce tracking on your website. If you like this or one of our other guide or tips articles, please post a comment below in the style of a pirate or ye olde English man. The choice be yars!
