Ramsay’s Web Wire – Issue #19: iPhone ShmyPhone Say’s Android

Well, I must say I’m surprised to see anyone. What with half the country queuing up and down the streets around apple stores yesterday to get hold of the new iPhone 4, I figured everyone would either still be there or constructing a shrine for their new prized possession. I haven’t seen that many people in a queue since McDonalds brought Supersize meals to Texas.

Despite Apple’s new release, Google seemed surprisingly at ease about the whole mobile competition. It is believed that when questioned on the matter, Eric Schmidt the Chief executive of Google said “Hakuna Matata” and then took a sip of his Pina Colada. Clearly Google have got some trick up their sleeve. Or perhaps it’s got something to do with the fact that 160,000 android phones are shipped worldwide every day. That’s almost enough to get one to everyone in Scotland in a month. Of course within a week half of these would have been traded for a bag of chips and a cigarette.

Also this week, the George Clooney of spam Mr Matt Cutts (I wonder if he has an iPhone?) was back with more useful webmaster videos. As ever it’s some pretty handy stuff with Matt looking into breadcrumbs appearing in search listings and whether SEO’s checking their own keywords is putting a slant on the results. Thanks Matty-boy! If you’d like to look as cool as Matt, then go and buy all of your t-shirts from gap. Seriously, every single one.

For all those geeks out there Google are offering a funky new command line tool. On installing this new feature you’re provided with a command prompt style interface on your browser. Now you can spend your time getting repeatedly frustrated when the cmd tells you that it doesn’t recognize the command, yet again. Thanks Google, next time how about making us answer a riddle every time we make a search.

Elsewhere, Flash is trying to undergo a resurgence, as they make a break for mobile integration. The new version looks to be more mobile friendly with massively reduced processor and memory requirements. While it looks set to go large on Android platforms, Apple swiftly kicked Flash integration into touch.

Lastly this week, why not jazz up your Chrome browser to show your love of the world cup or support your team on Facebook. If you don’t like Football, there’s always the Tennis. Frankly I’d rather stave my own head in with a racket.
