Another week has passed us by in the post apocalyptic world of the web and much like the debut album from the band 'The Cast', it’s ‘All Change’. Like so many times before, it’s mostly down to Google who have fingers in more pies than Sweeny Todd. In addition to this, Google’s Head of Spam Matt Cutts got back to doing what he does best by delivering new webmaster videos. And there was much rejoicing.
Earlier this week, Google announced that they were going to be phasing out the use of Microsoft’s Windows operating systems in their offices. Their statements seem to suggest that it’s mostly down to the insecurity of a variety of Microsoft applications. Basically this is a very polite way of saying that Microsoft do operating systems about as well as Steve Jobs does Flash apps. Many have suggested from within Google that they’ll be switching to Mac OS, but with Chrome OS set to land in Autumn, is this just a transitional period? If Google don’t adopt their new OS, who will?
It’s been a while since Matt Cutts gave us a webmaster tools video and while looking considerably less like an egg-head than before, Matt still gives us some much appreciated insight into SEO and features in webmaster tools. Matt also gives some explanation to Google Long Tail algorithm tweaks which have left many webmasters touching cloth.
It’s all Chrome at the minute and the browser isn’t disappointing. Personally I wouldn’t touch Internet Explorer with a very long stick and while they’re still top dog in the rankings, Chrome is on the way up with a market share of over 7% already.
Elsewhere Steve Jobs, leader of the Apple orchard, envisioned more change suggesting that sooner than you think the desktop PC will be a thing of the past. With the iPad becoming a hit after an un-assured introduction, Steve’s unsurprisingly cocky.
In other news, WolframAlpha the knowledge engine gave some startling insight into the worlds military powers. It turns out that Russia have enough nuclear warheads to decimate the planet. Good for Russia. Yahoo this week gave us a new top images and video search feature which on a scale of 'YaBoo' to 'Yahoo', gets a resounding ‘Meh’.
