With Google’s attention firmly fixed on China related issues at the moment, Bing have taken the opportunity to notify us of some additions made to their services. However it’s not simple propaganda but a selection of useful enhancements to their search functions. These will allow more precise and relevant information in the areas of health and treatments as well as detailed car searches.
Bing’s auto search function has been enhanced to allow more precise feedback to users based on the make and model of the vehicle they are searching for. On searching for your favourite make and model of car, Bing will return not only an expanded version of the vital information (such as fuel economy and user rating) but also a selection of quick links to additional information within the search result.
Furthermore, this expansion pales in comparison to the enhanced medical search which has gone live. This extremely useful addition will enable people to acquire more in depth and helpful medical information through their searches. On searching for a health condition such as type 2 diabetes for example users will be provided with a resultant summary from Bing's library of health resources and additional key pieces of information. This extra info will detail related conditions, medications and medical centres. Furthermore, the user will be able drill down through this extra information available. For example, by clicking on one of the medical centres listed they will be supplied with that centres patient rating compared with the state average.
In the case that the user opts to look into a medication in more detail they will be returned information on possible side effects of the drug as well as drugs which may react badly with it. All of these enhancements in their medical searches are the result of expanded medical data in conjunction with new partners supplying information for Bing.
Both this and the auto search features are playing a part in showing the usefulness and complexity that Bing is capable of as they look to expand their foothold in the search engine market.
