Imagine my delight when on Saturday night I stumbled upon an interesting new BBC series called The Virtual Revolution.
This new 4 part BBC 2 series tracking the history of the internet airs on Saturday nights and is hosted by Aleks Krotoski. This first part entitled “The Great Levelling” discussed the equalizing effect that the internet revolution has had on modern society. Some interesting ideas were discussed here, one being how hierarchy and elitism has emerged from the vessel that was set to revolutionise the way the modern world shares ideas and opinions.
Although the internet did revolutionise the way we communicate and exchange ideas, it seems that hierarchy and elitism are a fundamental part of the human condition and will always emerge. Even the Internet, supposed to create a forum for free speech and expression without governmental laws and censorship is not immune. Although, in my opinion, the internet does achieve this ambition it has also given rise to big business that also does not need to confirm to the same restrictions. On the whole it could be argued this is no bad thing – we always choose the websites we visit.
The show also showed the first ever 3D module of internet use in the UK.
One thing that also stuck in my mind was “A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace“, a paper written by John Perry Barlow. I have included a small passage below:
Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I
come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask
you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have
no sovereignty where we gather.
If you missed the first part of this great new series don’t worry, you can catch it now on the iPlayer and tune in on Saturday 10.05pm on BBC 2 to see the rest of the series.
