Cozy Digital Week-End Blog (22-01-10)

Another week down and 2010 looks to be really flying in. It seems like the worse of winter in now behind us so we can look forward optimistically to the return of sunlight. I think we’ve all missed that jolly yellow fella’. This week saw a great deal of press (good and bad) for Microsoft while Bing and Google were at their usual games of one-upping each other. Why can’t we all just get along?

Microsoft seems to have taken most of the flack for the recent attacks on Google with the German Government warning its citizens to avoid Internet Explorer. The French followed this boycott shortly after but not before supposedly surrendering to IE and waving a big white flag. Fortunately for Microsoft’s reputation they were able to provide a patch for the issue, although the fact the update was outside of their usual update cycle seems to suggest that they lost a little of their usual composure over this one. Elsewhere Microsoft and Apple seem to have buried the hatchet with Microsoft looking to supply Bing as the default browser for the iPhone. Bing received further kudos as it provided enhanced autosuggest features and updated its privacy policy for improved user security.

Of course Google are no shrinking violets and got up to a variety of things as per usual. New features for their Google Wave service were announced as well as that Google packs are now offering free Avast antivirus software as standard. They also got into the aid campaign for Haiti with a donation of their own and offered a variety of ways for Google users to help. Their AdWords service has made changes to the rules and conditions for ad campaigns. This could make some difference to how users set up their PPC campaigns. However, don’t be too hard on old Google, their Chrome browser seems to be suffering a bout of absent-mindedness as it forgets just who Google is?

Elsewhere in our blog we looked into what’s affecting the difference between PPC clicks and visits, as well as a guide to finding your way round Google webmaster tools. We also revealed how popular web searches have been affected by the recent weather.

Finally, we’re still taking your SEO questions on the moderator service, so if you have any questions that you really can’t find an in depth answer to then let us do the leg work for you. Just visit our SEO questions article to find out how.

P.S. The Cozy Digital officially reached 100 posts as of yesterday afternoon. Our winning blog writer was Robert who will be receiving a commemorative Cozy Digital plaque and gift basket of fine cheeses!
