Well this week certainly seems to have come in fast, a little too fast for the blog I’m afraid. As I’m sure you’ll have noticed there’s been no radical redesign of the Friday blog. Not even a new title or funky image unfortunately. As they say, good things come to those who wait so I will definitely be putting a bit of time aside next week to throw something together. On the up side this leaves you all a bit more time to get some ideas in on a new name for it.
As I’m sure most will know, the Super Bowl was on this week as thousands tuned in to watch what is basically rugby with too much padding. Either way, it’s a big chance for companies to take a prime advertising slot and surprisingly Google (who previously had an aversion to TV advertising) got in there with a 1 minute Google advert for a cool $5 mill. The EFF still managed to kill Google’s buzz, by pointing out how their own advert highlighted the importance of better data privacy. Speaking of Google’s Buzz, the new social networking service they’re providing got up and running and has had some mixed reviews. If you’ve used it why not let us know what it’s like.
It seems like this week has been all about security, safety and privacy on the web. Apparently Tuesday was ‘Safer Internet Day’, and I’m surprised we didn’t all get a holiday. Google showed their interest in your security through their TechTalk in Brussels. They also worked on making YouTube safer. On a negative note for the company they seem to have fallen out with another country in that Iran is looking to ban their Gmail service. If it keeps going like this Google might just have to buy a desert island to live on for when they eventually fall out with every country. Personally, I’ve heard rumours that Google’s been talking behind France’s back.
Elsewhere Google are working on a new project to provide 1 GB broadband and have also provided a useful video guide to using Website Optimizer, or is that Optimiser? I’d ask Google but they don’t seem to know themselves. They have also been working hard for Mac users with a new Chrome beta with extensions. As a side note, you can also visit the Google webmaster central channel at the moment for videos of Matt Cutts answering a variety of SEO questions.
That’s it for this week, but I hope next week I can find the time to get the new design into action. Honestly, it’s going to look really cool.
