January has come calling and brought with it a flurry of troubles. Before I begin ranting on in the timely fashion I’d like to wish everyone a happy new year. Hopefully it’ll be a good one but the weather seems to be adverse to that idea. First the snow, then more snow followed by a succession of snowy spells between sessions of falling sky ice. It’s been a little quieter around the office with members of our team snowed in for the time being but we struggle on. Our thoughts are with ‘poor’ Kev trapped in his warm cosy house. Anyway, to business.
We haven’t been idle since the New Year and neither have Google. The growing anticipation of the Nexus phone reached boiling point and it was finally released, much to the relief of thousands of Tech geeks across the world. Let the battle of iPhone vs. Nexus begin. With mobile capabilities on the incline it could mean a lot of advances in mobile internet advertising.
Furthermore they have certainly not been idle with promoting their Chrome browser. I’m sure you’ve all seen the newspaper adverts or at the very least the billboard adverts. Either way the campaign seems to be paying dividends with Chrome slipping in front of Safari as the third most popular web browser. In additions Chrome extensions became available to Mac users. Google also set about opening the voting for their Breaking Borders Awards which celebrates those web projects that have shown great ingenuity and resoluteness to keep pushing the political boundaries and standing up to censorship on the web.
In non-Google related news The London Mayor Boris Johnson is set to make announcements of the UK’s first online datastore. This will contain over 200 dataset, many of which contain previously unreleased information on the UK’s capital.
Aside from the news we’ve also been keeping up to date with new resources as they come available. We highlighted the usefulness of Google moderator, and how it can provide the ideal platform for companies and organisations to gather opinions of thousands in next to no time. Furthermore we pointed out a useful resource for improving and reviewing your UX design skills.
We’ll that’s it for another week and I’d wager on the weather getting worse before it gets better. Today brought thick fog to compliment the ice and arctic conditions. Next week look out for polar bears and the impending zombie apocalypse.
