In this latest Webmaster central video Matt Cutts gives you some ideas on how to build links to your website to strengthen its rankings. Although Google’s long standing stance on this subject is to create relevant content , the question was asked, apart from this, what other techniques is there to build good quality links to your website.
Some of the more notable ideas were:
Be controversial: This technique should really only be applied when you are particularly annoyed with something and not used to slag someone of just for the sake of being controversial. This can help you gain links as being controversial always gets people’s attention.
Participate in your community: This is an excellent way to build links you can offer advice and answer people’s questions via forums, blogs and social media. As Matt Cutts points out, answering someone’s questions can encourage people to check out the rest of your content and may result in someone linking back to your website as a good resource.
Doing your research: This is a really good tip because doing research in your industry can really encourage people to link to you. Performing research that no one else has bothered to do can really give your website relevant, original content that people will find helpful – thus encouraging them to link to you.
Newsletters: The use of regular newsletters can be a really powerful tool in connecting with your targeted audience. Most people won’t visit your website everyday, but people do check their emails several times a day. Although this is not an excuse to spam your subscribers constantly as this will soon see them opting out of your newsletter. A weekly or monthly newsletter with good content would be much more effective than a low quality email every day.
Social Media: Can be an excellent way to connect with people and encourage them to link to you. Using Twitter in conjunction with your blog is an excellent way to get your content out there and encourage people to link to it.
Blogging: There is really no excuse for not having a blog these days, the benefits of owning one can be far reaching for your business. For further tips on how to achieve this, take a look at How to Blog Your Way to Online Business Success.
However, to make any of these techniques successful you really have to start with good original content that is linkable. Without this it will be really difficult to encourage people to link to your content.
