So did you stay glued to your computer screen last night?! iPhone in-hand, drumming your fingers on your Mac Book Pro waiting for the latest sermon from Apple chief on-high Mr Steve Jobs? It turned out to be quite a spicy bit of news – the new version 4.0 of the iPhone and iPod touch operating software will get a stack of new features. In my humble opinion, some of the juiciest highlights:
- Multitasking (!!) – Hurrah! Yes, it finally happened, one of the biggest gripes poked at the iPhone was it lack of a seemingly essential feature such as multitasking. Hopefully iPhone users will be texting while playing games in the near future – it’s pencilled in for ‘summer’ this year. Potentially some bad news though, this feature will only apply to the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 3G, so if your packing some older apple kit then start frowning and tutting now…
- Folders – This may seems like a simple thing, but for people who install an ungainly number of apps then this will be a big deal. Now apps on the home screen can be organised into folders, simple drag and drop operations will allow even the most over-app’d iPhone user to stay organised.
- iAd – Feels like this has the capacity to be a big deal for Apple. This is the new advertising platform built into the new Apple OS 4 system which will allow advertisers to deliver adverts that “combine the emotion of TV with the interactivity of the web”. One to keep an eye on I think.
If you want to check all the new features then there is a full detailed break down on Apple’s OS 4 preview site.
Remember the iPad? Well some reviews have started to appear from people actually getting their paws on the new fangled device. The 18 page (!) review on Ars Technica makes some interesting observations, I was particularly interested in how the flat typing experience worked.
