You may or may not have noticed the link on the Google homepage at the moment which is just below the search box. It reads: ‘$10M to the 5 Project 10^100 winners’.
‘“Curiouser and curiouser!” Cried Alice…’
Well, this is a link to the results of a competition, launched by Google ages ago, which asked people ‘for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible.’ Ideas were submitted in 2008, voting took place in 2009 and now finally the results are in. Project 10100 received over 150,000 entries from hundreds of countries and Google, despite the fact it’s their 12th birthday today, has announced the winners.

So that was:
- $2 million to Khan Academy who provide free, high quality education online via over 1,600 videos
- $3 million to FIRST who promote science and engineering education around the world
- $2 million to Public.Resource.org which helps make government documents easily accessible online
- $1 million to Shweeb who are working on a human powered bike monorail project
- $2 million to AIMS (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences) who help spur advanced education in Africa
The next step sees Google hand over the cash to organisations in the best position to help implement the clever ideas.
