Google to Launch Improved Format for Image Results

Aside from the standard web search that Google provides, one of its most popular features is the image search. It’s an extremely useful tool for web browsing that many take for granted. Users can view millions of pictures from sites across the web without even having to browse the sites. Image search is so useful in fact that Google Web search often returns several image results above the list of sites. This can be very helpful in assuring the user they are looking for the right kind of site.

At this stage Google could simply have rested on their laurels. However, this seems like something Google have a problem doing. Instead, they have started work on an expansion and improvement of their image results feature.

Within the next 24 hours they expect to complete testing and roll out the new format for universal results. The current format simply takes the users input and returns a small selection of relevant images from the web in a simple one by one format. It needs little explanation as just about anyone who’s ever used Google will have come across it. Their new format looks to expand and fine tune this already excellent system by altering the method of how it displays the images.

The new format will take the users search query and return a larger image with additional smaller images alongside it. From here it will function much the same as before, with users able to click on the image to see it in full size on the original webpage. The main aim of this change is to maximise the small amount of image space in Google’s layout and provide more pictures than before making results more effective and easy to use.

At this time it remains to be seen how effective this new setup will be, but with the system due within the day it won’t be long before users can pass judgement on the change. Either way it shows the intent of Google to provide an adaptive service for its millions of users. It remains to be seen what’s next for Google’s search engine, but it probably won’t be long before the start to roll out further additions.

The new image format can be seen via this Google blog article.
