Street View is one of those tools that seems to have been around for ages, yet I never feel like I make best use of it, it’s such an incredible resource that often it feels like you are barely scratching the surface.
Never ones to rest on their laurels, the boffins over at street-view-central have been adding newer features. One such new feature is the ability to navigate through users photo’s via Street View.
You’re probably thinking ‘Haven’t we been able to view users photo’s on Street View before?’, well yes we have, but the ability to navigate via them is an interesting new adaption. The example used on Google’s Lat Long Blog (for Google Earth and Google Maps) is if you were browsing an area of a city and suddenly found that the road ran out, of course this means that Google’s street view car (or snowmobile!) can’t reach any further:
If you choose to view user photos (top right corner) then you now have the option to actually navigate around from one image to another, reaching areas that ‘normal’ Street View can’t reach.
You can see a number of silver spheres scattered across the image, these represent other images of the same location. By clicking or dragging on these you can navigate from one image to another. If you click-and-drag on the spheres at the corner then you can actually see the images fade into each other:
Its really quite a compelling way to view a location.
