It seems it’s all about touch screen interfaces these days, from phones to the new iPad, you can’t move for someone telling you about how your digital life will be improved by prodding some fancy new bit of kit.
Turns out that everyone’s favourite on-line replacement-for-a-memory – Google – have released their own plans to support touch screen interfaces via their Chromium projects site. The images are clearly still at a mock-up stage, but they still show the companies intent.
The “Window UI Variants” section of the Chromium Projects site details some of the concepts used for their products, such as the Chrome browser. For Touchscreen navigation they say:
“For touch screens, we provide much larger tab and toolbar targets than on standard chrome. This UI takes up more screen space, but is ideal for portrait devices, and can be autohidden to have full-screen content. This treatment could be used on any edge of the screen, and it may be preferable to use the bottom edge depending on the device.”
Mock-up images can be found on the Chromium Project site.
All this does beg the question whether consumers will actually want tablet computers, do they represent a tool for the masses? Are there enough people who just want a computer for simple tasks rather than wanting a ‘full laptop'?
