Matt Cutts, head of spam at Google, was asked the question last year in a Webmasters video “Will SEO still be around in 5 years” and of course he answered yes. Over the last year or so Google has become more public in its support of SEO with releasing its SEO starter guide.
It stands to reason that Google would support SEO as when it’s done correctly it can help Google understand the relevance of a web pages content more easily. The importance of building relevant content should be at the top of any good SEO company as this will make it a great deal easier get you good standing in the search engines and also be helpful to the searcher.
American businesses understand the importance of SEO and released that a monthly SEO budget of £500 is a wise investment. The UK however has been slow to react to the importance of search engine optimisation and is just beginning to release the advantages that SEO has over traditional forms of marketing.
One element of the SEO industry Matt Cutts would like to see be eradicated in 5 years is black hat SEO. Although this is becoming rarer these days it still seems to stick in the mind of businesses wanting to market their website.
Like every industry there are certain companies that have no knowledge of the industry but still claim to be SEO experts. My advice is to do your research and make sure you ask any prospective SEO company two questions. 1) What is it you will actually do? 2) Who have you worked with in the past?
If they cannot answer these two simple questions then do not use them. A SEO company must be able to offer you a breakdown of what techniques they will employ to get you good rankings. Every SEO company should be transparent, for that reason Cozy Digital created is Cozy Digital Labs SEO software (forgive the plug) so clients can track their SEO campaign with ease.

I sincerely doubt that non-american business all over the world (UK was mentioned here) are “just beginning to release the advantages that SEO has over traditional forms of marketing”.

Thank you for your comments. However I think I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Of course I can’t speak for everyone but In the UK at least, Cozy Digital have seen a massive rise in the amount of enquiries we have been getting from businesses realising the importance of SEO. We would love to hear from business owners themselves to get their views.
