There is a new sharp shooting Google Search feature and its fast. It just strode into town, whacked open the saloon doors, slammed its fist on the bar and demanded a sarsaparilla. Then gobbed into a bucket on the floor. This Search feature is soon to be known as the fastest gunslinger on the net, shooting down search results before you’ve even got your word out of its holster.

In all seriousness this is a cool new feature being tested by Google which was spotted by Rob Ousbey. As happens on Google and some e-commerce sites at the moment, the engine guesses at what you’re trying to type as you add each letter. But with this new feature, instead of just showing the suggested search terms, it changes the entire page of results as you type.
Pros
This feature, if rolled out across the board, will be a great addition. This is especially true for mobile searchers who can use all the help they can get when trying to search for something on the move. Having real search results pop up after you have typed only a few letters will save vital seconds when typing something like: “How to Survive A Wild Chinchilla Attack” or “Emergency Clint Eastwood Look-A-Like”.
It could actually have a big impact on Adwords, with the numbers of impressions your links receive going up as people correct or make mistakes as they type. There may also be more opportunity to try and grab someone’s attention midway through typing a long-tail query using image results or something. Eye tracking would be great to study this.
Cons
It could be argued that this is all just a bit too much. It could confuse some novice users and annoy many as the page jumps around a whole lot as you type.
I for one would like to see this rolled out as soon as possible. If you make a lot of searches a day, any way to speed up this process would be a good thing. However, with Google running all manner of experiments all the time, you or I will have to be quite lucky to have a chance to use this type of search before it gets a proper launch. That is if it gets implemented at all.
