Google To Take On Facebook?

If the rumours are true, 'Google Me' is the faintly cursive name that the Google's currently in-development Facebook rival will be given.

US newspaper heavyweight, The Wall Street Journal, is reporting that according to 'people familiar with the matter' Google looks set to bump heads with some of the biggest heads in social-networking and looks set to have games as one of their selling points. They are apparently talking to Playdom Inc., Playfish (owned by Electronic Arts) and the company that Google itself took a financial stake in – Zynga Game Network Inc.

When asked whether Google's new foray into social networking would 'resemble Facebook' Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt declined to confirm whether it was even under development, but said

“..the world doesn't need a copy of the same thing.”

The advantages that games producers must see is obvious, another big-name rival would mean they would not be reliant on Facebook. There must be some feeling of caution though, Google's record on this sort of thing is not entirely without blemish – for every ubiquitous GMail you also have your not-quite-YouTube Google Video's and what-about-Twitter Google Buzz's.

Let's not also forget the whole privacy issue, something that seemed to plague Google Buzz on launch. That miss-step from Mountain View's finest seems to colour Buzz's reputation even now – Google must surely be taking extreme care over how Google Me would (if it exists) treat user's data.
