Google Executive Gives Your Desktop Computer 3 Years

Are you ready to give up your desktop computer? Can you imagine living your entire online life via a mobile phone? Well Google’s vice-president of online sales and operations, John Herlihy is giving desktop machines a 3 year standing count.

Reported on Silicon Republic, Mr Herlihy was taking at the Digital Landscapes conference at University College Dublin when he said:

“In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs”

“Mobile makes the world’s information universally accessible. Because there’s more information and because it will be hard to sift through it all, that’s why search will become more and more important. This will create new opportunities for new entrepreneurs to create new business models – ubiquity first, revenue later.”

This trend away from stand alone computer can be already seen in modern households today – people often like the compactness and portability of the laptop or notepad (and that’s before we even talk about the iPad). Even the computer gamers are finding that current generation consoles are now capable of providing an online gaming experience that was previously the preserve of the home desktop machine.

With services like email increasingly accessible via new avenues such as cable television, the features that once defined the need for a home computer are being spread across other devices.

So, the question stands, are you ready to give up your home desktop machine?
