Google Creates Something Solid

So it happened, Google finally did it, they are in the hardware business.

The new Nexus One phone was released with much fanfare at yesterday’s press conference. Although the news of its arrival seems to have been one of the worst kept secrets (especially since videos and images of pre-release models were available) this certainly hasn’t dampened the warmth of its arrival.

The size of the phone looks to be fairly similar to the Apple iPhone, its slightly longer, slightly narrower, and about the same depth as Apple’s favourite. Full details of the complete specification can be found on Google’s Nexus One page.

Speaking of the name, it seems to be that its origins could be the source of some ill feeling. The New York Times reports that the original name of the Google operating system, Android, was a reference to the robot stars of the Starwars films. It appears that this name was licensed from George Lucas (the Starwars creator). However, for the Nexus One, whose name is apparently a reference to the Philip K. Dick novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, did not license its use. Isa Dick Hackett, daughter of Philip K. Dick, is quoted as being “shocked and dismayed” that Google’s new phone would be named in reference to her father’s book. The full article can be found on the New York Times.
