Hot on the heels of its recent triumph in the browser grand prix, Google has pressed out another glossy version of its increasingly popular Chrome browser.
There are a number of new features that will interest most users:
- Translate infobar: This is a great little tool that allows for in-browser translation of website text. So if you are researching some cutting edge electronic trinket that only available on the other side of the globe then there is a good chance you will find yourself on a website with text in a different language. Well cancel that order for learn-Japanese-in-30-days, Chrome will insert a bar at the top of your browsing window when it senses foreign language content. Simply press translate and the webpage will be magically turned into English before your very eyes.
Here is a video explaining how it works:
- Privacy features: Content Settings: There are options to control cookies, JavaScript, images, plugins and pop-up windows.
- Disabled Chrome’s XSS Auditor: This may not be a headline issue for normal users, but Google’s developers have decided to disable their anti-reflective-XSS (cross site scripting) feature while they analyse some performance issues found in rare cases.
Also in the post to the Google Chrome Release blog is a list of security issues addressed in this latest release, perhaps more interestingly is the sums actually awarded by Google to security researchers. One actually managed to bag himself $1337 after reporting a problem WebKit (which Chrome uses to render the page) JavaScript Objects. So if you are so inclined, there is potentially a bit of money to be made in spotting security issues in Chrome!
More information can be found on the Chrome Release Blog. Info about XSS Auditor and other security features can be found on the Chromium Blog. Finally, if you want to download Chrome, head over to the Chrome Homepage.
