Google Buffs Nexus One

The Google-in-your pocket phone, the Nexus One, has had a refresh in the form of an update pushed out yesterday.

The update contains some nice new features as well as improving some existing ones:

Google Goggles – This looks like it could be really terrific. It’s an app that allows you to use the phones camera to search and access information. Confused? Well one example shows the user pointing the camera at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco – the phone recognises this and displays information about it! Another example shows the user photographing a business card – the phone then ‘reads’ this information as text. Very nifty. Check out this video:

Google Maps – This is updated to version 3.4, additions include synchronisation with maps.google.com so starred items can be found on your phone. Search suggestions have also been added for maps.google.com so it’ll be easier to find previously searched for places. Finally, they have also added a ‘night mode’ which automatically changes the screen at night for easier viewing.

Pinch-to-zoom – This will be a big one for any iPhone converts! Browser, Gallery, and Maps app’s will now have a pinch-to-zoom feature.

3G – Improved connectivity.

Does indeed look like a good update. Some nice new features while others have received a pleasing polish.

More information can be found on the Nexus One Blog, Google Goggles labs page, and Nexus One homepage.
