In a recent email sent out to all customers who use PayPal to process orders PayPal have announced that they will no longer be accepting Maestro for certain types of UK website payment pro payments (virtual terminals and direct debit payments). The ones affected are listed below.
- Reference Transactions
- Recurring Payments
- Recurring Billing payments
The support will be terminated as of the 21st of January 2010. PayPal are advising that if your customers currently use Maestro cards to make payments on your website to contact them to provide alternative payment details to process orders. However payments through Express Checkout remain unaffected.
This is sure to have some major upset for customers and website owners alike especially if you have a large amount of customers using Maestro and this is the only card these customers have available to them.
To also add insult to injury Google Checkout has also announced it will be dropping the support for Maestro as of 27 Jul. A recent post on the Google Merchant forum asks the question why.
