It’s that time again where Nick and Nah answer your questions on Google Analytics via web Analytics TV. This episode has plenty of helpful information to help you get more out of Google Analytics.
Although a lot of the questions are for the more advanced user, I have highlight two of the questions in this post that I think you will find of interest, although I would recommend that you watch the whole video at the end of this post.
Site Overlay
The first question I found of interest and personally wanted to know the answer to was concerning site overlay. The problem is (and I’m sure you have wondered yourself if you use it). When you look at the amount of clicks a link has received you will notice that if there is more than one link to the same page the data will be the same for both links. The reason for this is although there are two links Google Analytics cannot split the data as the links go to the same page. Nash explains in the video that this is not just a problem with Google Analytics but a problem with all analytical tools.
However there is a solution, if you add parameters to the links and give them different names this will split the data. However you can image the amount of work involved to change all your links. If you want to get a more detailed explanation of this solution then watch the video at the end of the post.
What Data Should I Start To Look At?
A great bit of advice that Nash gave in this video is what are the first things you should be looking at in Analytics? As great as Google Analytics is it can be overwhelming in the amount of information it gives you and deciding on what the important information is can be difficult.

Two questions you should ask yourself are 1) what am I currently spending my money on? Whether it is SEO, PPC or email marketing. This is the data you should first analyse. 2) How much money am I making from my marketing? From here you can then begin to focus your attention on improving your ROI by looking at your goal funnels and see where people are dropping off. Improving these aspects will greatly affect your bottom line.
