Not so long ago (a year in fact) Analytics launched the Data Export API so that developers could create their own solutions to fit their Analytics needs. The bonus of this for Google was that they were effectively outsourcing development work free of charge. As a result Google Analytics are now able to announce 38 new solutions as part of their gallery.
Google have always been keen to make the public a part of their research and development and it’s certainly worked for them so far. They certainly like to get students in on the act with the start of the Google Summer of Code, an international program/competition to get student developers to code new applications with their help. Add this to the fact that Google provide a home developer program site and the fact that they give their employees one day a week to work on their own projects and you can see Google’s dedication to innovation.
That’s probably why they’ve seen such great results from the API. With those who use Analytics everyday working on or pioneering the solutions, these new additions are made by analytics users for analytics users and solve a lot of the problems that people have been unable to overcome in the past. Many of the new features have solved the problems of cross program integration such as combining Analytics with the benefits of Excel and PowerPoint. For use of analytics on different platforms, the Analytics HD feature offers access to a comprehensive Analytics platform from the iPad.
For a full list of the new applications see Google’s Analytics Application Gallery. Don’t forget however, to check out the BTBuckets application which offers some pretty advanced user segmentation and targeting all performed in real time. If you think you can outdo that or just have an issue in your analytics setup you think you can solve yourself then why not look into developing your own? You might find there are plenty of other people with the same issues. That’s the beauty of the developer API.
