It seems that all those TV adverts might have paid off for the Microsoft Bing search engine with news just in that it will soon be shipping as an optional search tool in the new version of Mozilla's browser – Firefox 4.
As many of you Firefox users know, searches can be performed in the UI via the box that sits to the right of the main address bar. For some time now there has been the option to change the default Google search to a variety of options such as Yahoo and Wikipedia, however in Firefox 4 this will be the first time that the Microsoft branded search tool will get a look in.
This news was released on the Mozilla Blog:
“Bing itself offers a user experience that we think users will find valuable, and with its significant rise in popularity over the last year, we will also be including Bing as a general search option for English language users.”

More interesting details appear in the Search Refresh FAQ linked to from the Mozilla Blog post:
“Do Mozilla and Microsoft have a commercial relationship for Bing.com?
Yes. The arrangement includes revenue-sharing based on traffic sent from Firefox to Bing's search service.”
So the arrangement to add Bing as an option goes beyond simply giving users this facility. Although Google's relationship with Mozilla is also mentioned:
“Google is, and remains, one of Mozilla's strongest partners. Google and Mozilla are well aligned on most issues affecting the open web. We have worked collaboratively on many initiatives in the past and expect to continue to do so in the future.”
So with more and more focus being placed on Bing SEO it seems that established players in the browser market could soon be boosting their traffic as well. Companies with a Google-only SEO strategy may find that this is no longer the best option.
