Facebook Take Over Websites… In a Good Way!

Facebook has more than 400 million users world wide. That's a lot of people: more than the entire population of the United States. A lot of people who are endlessly connecting to each other, interacting, and wanting to know what each other is doing and where and with who and to see what they are up to, what they are buying and what websites they like. Aren’t we nosey?

In the last few weeks Facebook has been under the spotlight for failing to protect personal privacy. You would think that this sort of bad press would have Facebook users switching off, unsubscribing and contacting their tech-savvy MP. But with no superior alternative, nosiness and loyalty have kept the number of subscribers rising.

Facebook has opened a social plug-in toolkit to help websites and other applications to tap into their immense army of Facebookers. With just one line of HTML website owners can have a range of plug-ins on their site so that users can easily interact with to show that they ‘Like’ something on a site or ‘Recommend’ it or ‘Comment’ on it. It stands to reason that if you are on a site and you can see that all of your best friends recommend something, then you are much more likely to like it too.

Imagine going on a news site and seeing commments, left by people you know, on an article or video, or going on a movie review page and being able to see films your friends have recommended. Here are all the social plug-ins you can now add to your website:

  • Like Button – A simple choice to show that a Facebooker likes something. A click on this link on your webpage will tell all your visitors friends that they like it and hopefully direct them to you.
  • Recommendations – Shows personalised recommendations to Facebookers visiting your website.
  • Login with Faces – This plug-in shows visitors which of their friends on Facebook have already signed up for your site.
  • Comments – This allows users to comment on anything on your website and share it with their Facebook friends. So they can tell their friends: ‘Hey guys check out this cool site and all their cool stuff.’
  • Activity Feed – Shows the most recent activity going on, on your site. So everyone knows.
  • Like Box – This plug-in is for Facebook Page owners and lets them show who likes their page and all the posts on it.
  • Facepile – Much like ‘Login with Faces’ but just a big pile of faces. Simples!
  • Live Stream – This is much like the status updates on your normal Facebook profile page. Having them on your website allows users to comment in real time on things like videos and webcasts you might be showing. Just like watching TV with your mates.

The chance to increase your traffic for any reason is no doubt a good thing, and with legions of Facebook fans, who are more motivated and focused than your everyday visitor, these social plug-ins may be a coup d'état for your current conversion rates.
