Didn’t make it to the world cup? Well you’re not the only one. The world cup kicks off today and the tension and excitement have reached fever pitch. For most of us the world cup will be enjoyed in pubs and homes across the country on hi-def, LCD or pretty much any screen you can park yourself in front of. But what about when you’re at work?
The inconvenient obligation looks set to get in the way of a lot of good old fashion footy viewing. It’s not all bad though, as you don’t have to be yearning while you’re earning. The world cup asks and the internet provides.
One way to get a glimpse of South Africa you where unlikely to see before is through Google Street View. While this useful tool is usually reserved for checking out scenic views or finding directions it’s just found an even greater cause. Google Maps Street View gives you a VIP pass into the world cups featured stadiums from the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. With several of the featured stadiums built specifically for the event and many others rejuvenated in anticipation of the biggest sporting event in the world, a look around the stadiums and an on-pitch view will certainly whet your appetite for the main event. Imagine yourself on the pitch staring out at an adulating crowd, or take a tour around the stadium where the final will take place.
It’s pretty cool stuff, but we want live coverage. Fortunately the BBC (co-providers of the world cups TV action) has plenty of online features so that you don’t feel like you’re missing out. Get news, instant updates and live coverage of the World Cup opening ceremony. Furthermore get the opening match live on BBC radio 5 available online at 3pm.
With the world cup now upon us no man should miss out on the action so if you have any further tips for catching the main event online then please let us know. Role on the main event!
