Ever wanted to develop your own apps but don’t have the programming knowledge to get started. It might be the case that you have loads of great ideas but no way to put them into action.
Well now thanks to Google Android App Inventor, everyone has the potential to start creating a range of applications in their own image. This is because instead of writing code, you simply put together the app as you want it to appear visually and put the functionality together from an array of technical building blocks. These apps aren’t just basic functions either, as they can integrate features including SMS messaging, GPS or even interaction with Twitter.
How Does it Work?
The App Inventor platform can be used to develop a wide range of projects including games such as ‘whack a mole’ or even an application to help you find your car. The application simply and elegantly brings together blocks of ready-made code (selected via buttons) to perform an array of functions that cover just about anything you can do with an Android Smartphone.
As a result the App Inventor program is already being given trial runs in schools across America giving students the opportunity to get hands on experience of designing new and exciting apps.
Google’s Mark Friedman stated “App Inventor for Android gives everyone, regardless of programming experience, the opportunity to control and reshape their communication experience. We’ve observed people take pride in becoming creators of mobile technology and not just consumers of it.”
Hands-on with Google
Google and Android have long been developing a reputation for being open-source in their approach, putting their potential in the hands of freelance and private developers. This new platform will open up their applications to an even wider audience providing a fantastic involvement device. Mark Friedman stated it himself that it instils a sense of ‘pride’ in the creator.
By allowing users of all types into their developer world, they create a sense of pride of ownership in the use of the Android platform making others more likely to get involved. I don’t even have an Android phone and I want to have a go at App Inventor.
While you can’t simply download the App Inventor platform, you can complete this form to get an invitation to use it. Conversely, don’t expect anything similar from Apple any time soon.
