We all know that Google Webmaster Tools is an excellent repository for how Google see's your site, but now it's been made even more useful by actually helping you spot 'spikes' in potential issues.

As Googlebot rummages through your site most pages will respond with a '200 response' – a code that basically says that everything is ok with that request. If the page cannot be found then the more widely known '404 response' is returned. Google keeps a note of these 'crawl errors' and you can find a list of them by logging in to your verified site in Google Webmaster Tools.

A handy new feature that Google is introducing is the ability for them to inform you via Webmaster Tools message (or by email via the email forwarding feature) that a sudden increase, or 'spike', in the number of crawl errors has been noticed. This is great safety net for site owners, if you don't receive an error then you can be sure that Google hasn't spotted any errors while indexing your pages, you can sleep soundly!
