It appears that there have been further developments in light of the large scale cyber attacks last month. These attacks hit a variety of companies ,including Google, attempted to steal private information. Now Reports in a variety of national newspapers are suggesting that the source of the attacks has been traced to two Chinese schools.
Investigators have apparently traced the attacks to Shanghai Jiaotong University and the Lanxiang School. The investigation seems to suggest that US officials believe they have tracked the individual who created the code used and have linked his work to Chinese officials.
The Chinese state news agency have already countered these allegations by stating their shock at the allegations, branding them ‘baseless’ and harmful to the University’s reputation. They also added that the evidence the investigators had put together was based on IP address information which can easily be faked and is hence an almost worthless source of evidence.
Other Chinese representative went on to suggest that China is at risk as much (if not more) than anyone else from hackers and online crime due to their dependence on foreign methods of internet security and services.
At present it seems that the evidence put forward by the investigators seems very weak at best and it remains to be seen whether any real grounded evidence can be found linking Chinese officials to the attacks. Until then however it remains a matter of speculation between the US and China and a strain on their diplomatic relations.
