It doesn’t look like a good week for Microsoft with a couple of issues coming out of the woodwork. Accusations over the design of their new MSN China service have come to light while another application they have been working on for some time may have been made obsolete before it’s even completed. All in all not a great start to the day.
Firstly Microsoft has been called out over the originality of their MSN China service known as Juku. Juku works like a kind of twitter service in Asia. However Canadian start-up Plurk have come out and accused Microsoft of not only using a very similar design to their application, but also the same code. A spokesperson for Plurk wrote “Blatant theft of code, design, and UI elements is just not cool, especially when the infringing party is the biggest software company in the world”. It remains to be seen how this pans out but either way it puts pressure on Microsoft’s reputation in the mean time.
In addition to this Microsoft may have to come to terms that their forensic tool for law enforcement ‘COFEE’ may have been made obsolete. The program released that is causing this headache for Microsoft (fittingly called Decaf) is the brainchild of a group of hackers which effectively renders the Microsoft operation null and void.
Although the application was not the biggest of deals for Microsoft and there is no confirmation of the viability of Plurk’s claim as of yet, it still amounts to a bad day at the office for Microsoft.
