Earlier today Bing announced on its search blog of its intent to change its privacy policy. Reese Solberg, Privacy Manager at Bing, stated that today that they had sent a letter to the Article 29 Working Party notifying them of their intention to make changes to Bing’s data retention policy.
The change basically means Bing is reducing the amount of time they store IP address from 18 months to 6 months. When Bing receives its search data it first separates your account details (like email and phone number) from the information, then after 18 months they take steps to remove the stored IP addresses.
We think this gives us the right balance between making search better for consumers (we use the data to improve the service we offer) and providing greater protection for the privacy of our users.
This is a strong step forward in our journey to protect the privacy of our customers while providing a great set of search tools.
