Over the past couple of months Bing seem to have redoubled their efforts to make their search engine more advanced and accessible to their users. The recent additions of enhanced auto and medical features were a major boost for their potential. Most recently they have made enhancements to their auto suggest feature to further improve their user experience.
The enhancements added to their autosuggest feature allow the service to maintain an up-to-date system that apparently pushes out updates every 15 minutes. This allows autosuggest to make suggestions to user queries based on the most current of events. For example, a user is now able to enter a region or city and the Bing search bar will provide the most up to date suggestions for events or relevant searches in that area such as the days weather warnings. In doing this, Bing hope to improve some of what the Bing search blog state are approximately 45% of queries that result in immediate re-query or abandoning the page.
Recent additions like this seem to emphasise Bing’s push to increase its share in the search engine market. However in this case it is simply a case of playing catch up with Google who already offer an up-to -date autosuggest feature. On the other hand however, Bing’s closest rival Yahoo doesn’t offer such an updated service and could lose ground to Bing as a result. Yahoo’s position as the second place search engine has become less secure in recent months as Bing has begun to rein them in.
While it’s unlikely that Bing will challenge Google any time soon, surpassing Yahoo would surely constitute a major victory for them.
