Are Facebook’s New Privacy Settings Enough?

It'll probably be looked back on as one of the defining moments in online privacy and data security. Finally a moment when the massed millions woke up to the notion that sharing much of the information that they have placed on social networking sites, was perhaps not the best of choices.

Facebook's reach into the very heart of non-technical and casual internet user's lives, meant that this story of privacy settings and data security was relevant to millions of people. Suddenly mainstream media organisations realised that this had become a big deal.

The new privacy settings that have been announced should help to dampen some of the criticism Facebook has received from groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Indeed the latest coverage on the EFF blog is at least partially supportive of some of these latest changes:

“The changes are pretty good, though more is needed.”

“We appreciate that Facebook has taken the time to listen and respond to the public outcry over its latest privacy changes, and although today's changes don't address all of our concerns, they are a great first step in what will hopefully be a more privacy-driven direction for Facebook.”

Their latest post (May26th) is an invaluable tool for any Facebook user who is concerned about privacy. It details the new privacy features and guides the user around the new privacy settings interface. What's more, they have actually provided a narrated video of the new options:
