What a day!
Yesterday, in San Francisco at the opening of Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC10), Apple CEO Steve Jobs revealed the hotly anticipated iPhone 4 in his 2 hour keynote speech. The device will be available from the 24th June in 5 countries, the US price for the 32GB model is $299 (£206) and $199 (£137) for the 16GB model and ‘oh my’ does it look nice.
New Design
The phone looks rather nice, a glass (apparently made from the same stuff as the glass in helicopter windscreens) front and rear, and a stainless steel (of their own compound design: iAlloy?) trim around the sides. This steel rim will also act as the antenna to improve reception. In his speech Steve says there are over 100 new features, but here are some stats to go with the pictures:
- 9.3mm thick (which is 24% thinner than iPhone 3GS)
- Front and rear facing camera
- 960×640 pixels display
- 800:1 contrast ratio (4x better than 3GS)
- 326 pixels per inch
- IPS tech – better colour and wider viewing angle
- New A4 chip
- Better battery life all round

HD Camera/Video
A major new feature is the front and rear facing cameras. These can be used for not only taking pictures, but for video calling and for taking HD video! Here are all the details:
- Front and rear facing camera
- 5 mega pixel
- 720p 30fps
- 5x digital zoom
- Tap to focus
- Record and edit HD video
- iMovie for iPhone 4 available in app store
- Tap to focus video
- LED flash
And specifically for the Video Calling functions:
- It’s called FaceTime
- No set up required
- iPhone 4 only
- Needs WiFi in 2010 – but aiming to be more widely available when 4G and network providers are up to speed
- Aiming to be open industry standard eventually
Gyroscope
There is a nifty built in gyroscope so you can play games and use other applications which can benefit from this function. Statistics…
- 3 axis gyro
- Pitch, roll and yaw
- Rotation about gravity
- New core motion API
- Standard in iPhone 4
- Gyro + accelerometer provide 6axis motion sensing
Retina Display
What Apple are calling ‘Retina Display’ is an LCD which has a super high pixel density. It squeezes 960×640 pixel resolution into 3.5 inches. That’s 326 ppi.
iOS4
With a new operating system to be released on June 21st, there are even more new features to look forward to:
- Multitasking
- iBooks
- Folders
The combination of iPhone4 and iOS4 will give Apple massive plus in the platform war with Google Android. But will Apple’s tight control over its content when compared to the likes of Android, prevent it from running away with the percentage of market share? I still want one though…
