To say Adobe CS5 is a feature-packed piece of software would be to massively undersell what a comprehensive suite of tools for any design and creative professional. To list all the new features would take all day, so here are some of my highlights…
- Photoshop – Content Aware Fill: We’ve talked about this one before but it’s a really big deal, for people editing photos on a daily basis this has the capacity to save huge amounts of time. It doesn’t just have implications for people looking to make extensive changes to images for print or the web, but also for photographers removing dust marks from images or repairing old prints. Content ware fill evaluates the area around the selected portion of the image and will try to seamlessly blend and create content to ‘fill the gap’. It’s really remarkable stuff, a killer feature for sure.
- Dreamweaver – Discover and Enhanced Live View: Increasingly web developers are no longer coding HTML for simple all-in-one web pages. Content management systems mean that often the page will have a number of dynamic elements that have to be included to actually make up the page. The example used in Adobe’s video is of someone editing a php page from a CMS system, of course this means that the final outcome of the changes made can be difficult to visualise, but with the ‘Discover’ feature included with Dreamweaver CS5 it will actually go off and find those files that make up the complete page, from there the Enhanced Live View will actually show an accurate final representation of the completed page. It shows that Adobe recognises that the web is changing and they still want their tools to be the default choice for web development professionals.
- Browserlab – Differences in how different browsers display a web page have long been the bane of web developers, just the process of checking every browser can take a significant amount of time, then you have to check any differences and develop around them. Adobe has included Browserlab is CS5 to streamline this process, from Dreamweaver you can simply preview your current document in Browserlab by hitting the preview button. Browserlab will then give you the option to display your content in a variety of different browser and operating system options. There is even the option to view them side by side or even in an ‘onion skinning’ mode where you can fade one into another to spot the differences.
With weighty headline features it seems this newest Creative Suite release should be well received indeed.
