Beta

Beta or beta release refers to the first release of software for testing purposes. It’s an ideal way for the software developers to iron out any bugs before the full release. People who test this version are referred to as Beta testers. Beta can be realised either in a closed or open Beta. Closed Beta is available to a select few of individuals usually within the developer’s origination; an open Beta test is usually open to the general public.
 

Binary

Binary is a computer language comprising of two values ones and zeros. Binary is used in all modern computers. Also used it the graphic representation of most electronic devices for the on and off switch.
 

Backlinks

In SEO terms a back link is a text link on a website that points to your website. The number of backlinks can be used in the Google algorithm to determine the relevance of pages for use in its search results.
 

Bad Neighbourhood

A bad neighbourhood can be a group of websites or WebPages that Google has detected as being active in the use of bad search engine optimisation techniques. Linking to said websites can have a detrimental effect on your website ranking in the search engine results pages.
 

Black Hat SEO

Unethical SEO techniques are referred to as Black Hat SEO. An example of Black Hat techniques would be keyphrase stuffing, which within the content of a webpage over uses a keyphrase to try and trick the search engines into thinking that their page is relevant for a particular keyphrase. Search engines are continually updating their algorithms to combat these techniques.
 

Blog

A Web log or Blog for short is usually a private journal of a person’s thoughts and activities. Blogs are also used by organisations to inform the public of news, views and recent events.
 

Bookmarks

Most browsers have the ability to save your favourite websites so you can quickly reference them. Internet explorer refers to them as favourites, whereas Firefox another popular web browser just refers to them as bookmarks.
 

Breadcrumbs

Navigational structure that helps search engines and users understand the relationships between different webpage’s.
 

Broken Link

A link within a webpage that when clicked doesn’t function and doesn’t lead to another webpage. This usually happens when a website links to a site that may have removed the webpage or renamed it.
 

Browser

A piece of software used to display and navigate websites on the internet. The most popular is Internet Explorer from Microsoft as it comes bundled with Windows. Another popular browser is Firefox by Mozilla
